Back to School Money Saving Tips

Study Up On Savings!

Your latest visit to your favorite store has no doubt dedicated a large special section filled with brightly colored notepads, shiny pencil pouches and adventure-themed backpacks.

It’s back-to-school time and the excitement of new adventures can also be a time of extra expenses.

Don’t let long lines and hefty price tags spoil your shopping experience. School shopping can be both enjoyable and thrifty if you heed the following tips:

Buy essentials

Classroom lists don’t change much over the years. Regardless of what grade your child is entering they likely need pencils, paper, rulers, erasers and so on.Check last year’s supply in your own closet. If you can reuse something you already have, do so.

Ask your neighbors and friends to have a school supply swap party. The savings will add up!

Pay with cash

Set a budget and make a list of the essentials you will need for the first few weeks. Pay for those pencils, books and other less costly items with cash.

Avoid impulse purchases and stick to your budget. Save the more expensive items such as laptop computers for credit card purchases.

Skip the tax:

Taxes can add up but did you know many states offer a tax-free shopping day?

Check out which states offer such holidays and when at the Federation of Tax Administrators’ website at www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales_holiday.html to see if your state offers a sales-tax holiday.

Coupons and more coupons!

Why pay full price? Save money by taking just a few extra minutes to find deals on back-to-school items.

  • Check your local newspaper or wait until your favorite store has the items on sale.
  • Stock up on buy-one-get-one free products. Don't forget to look at online coupons, too. You can go to manufacturer's websites or browse specific coupon sources for a wide range of deals.
