We Grow Stronger

At Great Western Bank, we find significance in building a richly diverse work environment that supports the independent initiatives of our internal talent-base. It is with great commitment we have cultivated a strategy that embraces diversity and inclusivity; resulting in strengthened performance and a better-realized culture.

When we asked employees, “What does Diversity and Inclusion mean to you?” Kaylea Pallister, a personal banker in Omaha, shared, “To me, diversity and inclusion center upon the understanding of intersectional identities and how those identities shape who we are and how we navigate our worlds. These facets include, but are not limited to, race, gender, sexuality, ability, and socio-economic class. Every person we will ever meet has an entirely unique set of experiences, and while we each have a lens of our own intersectionality, we can always endeavor to be more cognizant and accepting of all of the aspects that compose each person and to value them in their entirety.”

The richness of what makes each of our Great Western Bank employees uniquely different, allows our teams to leverage the individual abilities of others. Amber Ledin, a Great Western Bank team leader, notes, “…every person is unique and we all have differences that make us stronger as a team. These differences can be race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, etc. A diverse and inclusive workforce is a necessity to remain competitive in our globalized world.”

As we look to 2020, capturing the wide-eyed excitement of new resolutions and reimagined opportunities, our Great Western Bank employees look to continue their focus on diversity and inclusion, both from a personal and professional position. Carly Kendle, an employee from our Lincoln Great Western Bank office, had these commitments for herself:

  • Continue to educate myself on diversity and inclusion. This includes being aware of any unconscious bias I may have, and continue to analyze my own personal potential assumptions and biases on people. Self-awareness brings positive change.
  • Take time to learn about different cultures, religions, backgrounds, and cultural holidays.
  • Mix up the people I interact with in my personal and work life.
  • Continue to welcome ideas that are different from my own and embrace the creativity of my coworkers.
  • Commit to continuous improvement in myself, and be willing to find opportunities for feedback and growth.

There is tremendous power in broadening our influences; allowing us to communicate with, learn from, and collaborate with individuals different from ourselves. Another Great Western Bank employee, Erin Thomas, had this to share, “We all play a role in making sure everyone has a seat at the table and everyone at the table has a chance to give their input. It is my responsibility to give a fair and equitable chance to those around me, and to continue expanding my circle. I do not want to be limited in my exposure to others and their circumstances and experiences.”
