Making Life Great Grants April, May, and June 2021

Great Western Bank recently awarded Making Life Great grants to commendable non-profit organizations within our nine-state footprint. Read more on how these organizations continuously create solutions to strengthen our communities.

Rose Brooks Center

Rose Brooks Center is an organization that helps support its Economic Advocacy program that addresses DV survivors’ barriers to financial stability by providing individual and group financial literacy education, case management, employment advocacy, and limited finance assistance. The organization was presented with a $4,000.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used to help support its Economic Advocacy program, which addresses DV survivors’ barriers to financial stability by providing individual and group financial literacy education, case management, employment advocacy and limited finance assistance.

Watertown Area People Against Child Hunger (PACH)

Watertown PACH works closely with school staff members to provide meals to students who may need an additional food resource throughout weekends during the academic year. They were awarded a $5,000.00 Making Life Great Grant, which will be used to purchase food and supplies to feed Watertown families who are facing food uncertainties.

The Banquet

The Banquet is an organization who fulfills the needs of the hungry and encourages the health and wellness in their community. Their mission is to provide a welcoming place where people can gather, receive nourishment, experience love in action, and to assist volunteers in providing good and fellowship to those served in the community. The organization was presented with a $7,500.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used towards increased food needs in the Sioux Falls.

Rapid City Club for Boys

Rapid City Club for Boys delivers many needs in the lives of the boys in the community, and has continuously been a positive influence on the lives of over 39,000 individuals throughout several years. The organization emphasizes on everyday guidance and equal opportunity. They were awarded a $2,500.00 Making Life Great Grant, which will be used to provide comprehensive afterschool and summer programs for boys 6-17, and to provide nutritional program and family services for families who need extra help with basic needs.

Black Hills Area Habit for Humanity, Inc.

The Black Hills Area Habit for Humanity is an organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing by constructing simple, affordable houses with families in need who partner with Habitat through sweat equality. The organization was presented with a $2,500.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used towards supporting new construction projects in Rapid City.

Grow South Dakota

Grow South Dakota was established in 2007, and strives to contribute housing, economic development programs, and community services. The organization has provided assistance to local individuals, families, business owners in distressed communities and underserved markets for the last 50 years. They were awarded a $10,000.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to support South Dakota families and small businesses owners with financial assistance.

Jasper County Habitat for Humanity

The Jasper County Habitat for Humanity is an organization that strives to provide opportunities for affordable housing, as well as establish connections and partnerships within the Jasper County community. They bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. The organization was presented with a $2,500.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used to construct single-family homes for low-income families.

Domestic Sexual Assault Outreach Center

Domestic Sexual Assault Outreach Center is a crisis-based shelter that offers a host of assistance to victims and their children escaping domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, stalking, and violent crimes. Services within the shelter are all free of charge, confidential, and supports the survivor’s ability to once again control their own life. They were awarded a $5,000.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used for operations of the crisis-based shelter in 20 counties located in North Central Iowa.

Circle of Freedom

The Circle of Freedom is an organization that leads women struggling with life-controlling addictions to freedom in Jesus and helping them reestablish their lives. They provide mentorship and discipleship through jail ministry, mentoring, and Biblical counseling. The organization was presented a $5,000.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used for building renovations for the women’s residential home to provide a safe place during a time of transition and life reestablishment.

Chrysalis Foundation

Chrysalis Foundation invests in the safety, security, education, and economic empowerment of girls and women in our community. They were awarded a $2,500.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to expand the Chrysalis after school program meteor curriculum to include education on alternatives to a four-year college. Lessons include post-secondary options, non-traditional careers, and career coaches.

Hospice of Central IA DBA Everystep Foundation

Hospice of Central IA (DDA Everystep Foundation) is an organization that prioritizes in health care and human services, and known for their ability to help patients, clients, and their families and to support community partners as they navigate challenges, address complicated care issues, and achieve high-quality outcomes. The organization was presented with a $2,500.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used to help support the expansion of the Stork's Nest Program, which provides at-risk, low-income, pregnant or parenting individuals with prenatal and newborn health education.

Claude W & Dolly Arends Foundation, Poweshiek Housing Assistance Fund

The Claude W & Dolly Arends Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life for the Grinnell community by providing innovative charitable programs and support to local community projects and needs. They were awarded a $20,000.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to help support the Poweshiek Housing Assistance Fund for the homelessness in Poweshiek County. This Program is available to assist those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homelessness with support of rental deposits, utilities and legal documents needed to rent or reimburse landlords or related expenses.

Completely Kids

Completely Kids is an organization that educates and empowers kids and families to create a safe, healthy, successful, and connected community. Their services address poverty, exposing kids to new and enriching opportunities and supporting parents in their journeys to achieving success for their families. The organization was presented with a $5,000.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used to support workforce development, professionalism training, goal setting, attainment, and employment opportunities for high school students in Central Omaha.

Center for People in Need

Center for People in Need began distributing truckloads of household and office goods to area nonprofits. A few years later, they organization expanded their space and programs to better serve their community. The organization is dedicated to decrease poverty in their community and to offer basic needs, along with educational and training opportunities for low-income families. They were awarded a $10,000.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to help support the newly established JLL Diaper Bank as well as providing 50,000 to 60,000 diapers.

Fresh Start

Fresh Start is an organization that empowers women experiencing homelessness and recognizing their strengths to overcome obstacles, giving many women hope again. The organization was presented with a $8,500.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used to care for women who are homeless, who are entering the Fresh Start program for safe shelter, and who will work through individualized goal programs.

Mission Possible Center

The Mission Possible Center was formed in 1979 after a short-term mission trip outreach to Haiti. The organization reached out to mountain villages around Montrouis, to construct and establish schools, provide much-needed food and relief supplies, and foster evangelism. They were awarded a $5,000.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to help cover underperformance of food, cleaning supplies, and face mask costs during the closure of their thrift store. Their thrift store typically contributes a majority of the food pantry costs.

The Food Bank for Central Northeast Missouri

The Food Bank for Central Northeast Missouri distributes regional disaster and hunger relief network that acquires and distributes millions of pounds of food annually to partner agencies across a 32-county area. The organization collaborates with soup kitchens, shelters, and other agencies to ensure food gets into the hands of those who need it most. They were awarded a $5,000.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to support the TFB Buddy Pack Program in Sullivan County. The program is designed to supply a stable source of nutritious in weekend meals and snacks.

Coal Creek – Adult Education Center

Coal Creek Adult Education Center is an organization that meets the educational needs of motivated adults seeking to advance their education. Their classes allow their students to obtain their High School Equivalency, improve their basic skills, learn English, and become lifelong learners. The organization was presented with a $5,000.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used to support free and in-person educational sessions.

Coal Creek Meals on Wheels

Coal Creek Meals on Wheels delivers high-quality, nutrient-dense meals every weekday to individuals who are limited in physical capacity due to illness, age, and/or disability. This service assists our clients in living independently and maintaining a quality of life that is better than they would otherwise experience. Individuals from the program believe that the social and emotional assistance received through the staff members and volunteers is irreplaceable. They were awarded a $4,200.00 Making Life Great grant, which will be used to provide 54,250 meals to at least 530 unduplicated individuals who are at risk of hunger and isolation.

MentorKids USA - CO

MentorKits USA is an organization that invests in the youth in under-served communities to become transformative leaders in their lives, their families, and their communities. They offer support in academics, leadership development, spiritual development, and life skills. The organization was presented with a $7,500.00 Making Life Great grant that will be used for one-on-one mentoring, work-readiness classes, community service opportunities, and leadership development training. The program provides leaders part-time pay with paid work experience as tutors and mentors to youth K-8 after school and during summer enrichment programs.
