Digital Wallets FAQ
A digital wallet is your wallet - but in digital form! Digital wallets allow you to make a purchase in a store, in an app or even on a website with a participating merchant without your physical Great Western Bank debit card. Instead, you just need a compatible phone or wearable device.
There are many benefits to making purchases with your Great Western Bank debit card using your digital wallet, including:
- It's convenient – You don’t have to worry about having your card with you.
- It's fast – Transactions made with a digital wallet are almost instant instead of having to insert your card and waiting for the transaction to process.
- It's secure – During a transaction, merchants are provided with a one-time password, or a token, rather than your card number, making it nearly impossible for a fraudster to steal your card information.
Yes. Digital wallets use security features that are built in to your device to protect your transactions. Additionally, you will be required to authenticate yourself before each transaction can be processed. Depending on your device type, the authentication step may be completed using your fingerprint, facial recognition, passcode or a PIN. The digital wallet providers do not store or have access to your full account number. The last four digits of the card number will be displayed on your card image to help you manage your cards. When a transaction is made, a unique one-time passcode, known as a token, is sent to the merchant rather than your full account number, making it nearly impossible for your card information to be compromised.

You will need:
- An eligible Great Western Bank debit card
- A compatible device with a digital wallet app
- A data plan or access to Wi-Fi
Great Western Bank debit cards associated with a consumer, business or HSA account are eligible to be added to your digital wallet.
Great Western Bank debit cards can be added to any of the following digital wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay or Garmin Pay.
Most mobile devices have a digital wallet app preloaded, depending on the device. For iPhones, the app is called "Wallet" while on Samsung and Android devices the app is called Google Pay or Samsung Pay. If your device does not have the app, it can be downloaded from the app store. Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay use the Fitbit and Garmin apps respectively.
To load your Great Western Bank debit card into your digital wallet, first, locate your digital wallet app on your phone. Digital wallet apps are preloaded on most devices. If not, or you previously deleted it, you may download it from the app store as long as your device is compatible. Once you are in the app, follow the on-screen instructions. The app will instruct you to scan or manually enter your card information, verify your card details, review and accept the terms and conditions, and complete a verification step. Once the verification step is complete, then your device is ready to use! Please note that the instructions may vary by device type. Follow these instructions to make your Great Western Bank debit card your default card, depending on your device type:
iPhone or iPad
Click on Settings, then Wallet & Apple Pay. Then scroll down to Default Card under the Transaction Defaults section to choose your default card. Within the Wallet app, you can also touch and hold a card and drag it to the front of your cards.
Within the Apple Watch, click the My Watch tab, then Wallet & Apple Pay. Then click Default Card to choose your card.
Within the Google Pay app, click Payment at the bottom. Then, tap the card you want to make your default. Turn on "Default for in-store purchases."
Samsung Pay does not have an option to set a default card. Instead, the most recently used, viewed or added card will display.
Within the Fitbit app, click on the Account icon and then click the Wallet tile. Find your Great Western Bank debit card and click "Set as Default."
For Garmin Pay, your most recently used or loaded card will display first. You can scroll down on your watch to select a different card.
Yes. There is no limit to the number of Great Western Bank debit cards that can be loaded into your digital wallet. There may be a limit to the number of cards that your digital wallet allows, however.
Yes. You can add your Great Western Bank debit card(s) to multiple digital wallets and/or devices.
You may use your digital wallet at many different merchants such as grocery stores, department stores and restaurants. Digital wallets are also accepted in many apps and on participating websites with your computer, phone or tablet, depending on the compatibility of the devices. Use your Great Western Bank debit card to make a purchase with your digital wallet wherever you see these symbols:
The process for completing a transaction using a digital wallet varies depending on your device type. The general process, however, includes these steps:
To make a purchase in-store at a terminal that accepts your digital wallet for payment, hold your device near the terminal. You will be required to authenticate yourself with your fingerprint, facial recognition, a passcode or a PIN, depending on your device. Once authenticated, the transaction will take just a second to process and will notify you when it has been completed.
When making a purchase in an app that offers digital wallets as a payment type, locate the digital wallet icon at checkout. After clicking on the icon, you will have the option to select a different card, shipping address and contact information. The total charge amount will also be displayed. If all of the information looks correct, complete the transaction by authenticating yourself with your fingerprint, facial recognition, password or PIN, depending on how this is set on your device.
No. There are no fees associated with this service.
Yes. If you add your Great Western Bank debit card to a digital wallet, your physical card can still be used like it is today.
Yes. If you receive a new device, add your card to your digital wallet as if you were setting it up for the first time.
No. If you receive a new phone number, you do not need to re-register your digital wallet.
If you opted to receive your verification code via SMS during the set up process but did not receive it, please contact us at 1.800.952.2043 to activate your card.
No. You are not responsible for any fraudulent transactions made with your Great Western Bank debit card.
If your card is lost or stolen, please contact us at 1.800.952.2043. You can remove the card you added to the device within your digital wallet app. Once you receive your replacement card, add your new card to your digital wallet as if you were setting it up for the first time.
No. If your Great Western Bank debit card is cancelled, it cannot be used to make a purchase within your digital wallet. Once you receive your replacement card, add your new card to your digital wallet as if you were setting it up for the first time.
If you lose your device, you may want to contact your service provider to suspend your service for that device. You can still make payments using your physical Great Western Bank debit card. If you would like to cancel your card and order a replacement card, please contact us at 1.800.952.2043.
